Autism has as many faces as there are children and adults who are affected by it. And the ways parents handle it are as wide as the spectrum itself. But one thing for sure is that, as a parent, you need an ally — someone who understands and knows what to expect in adjusting to, operating with and becoming successful in parenting a child on the spectrum.
This ally needs to bring not just theory, but also understanding and experience. In addition to being well-educated and well-versed in current thinking and approaches, an effective ally needs to understand what you face as a parent and the shifts, both internal and external, that must take place for success.
Above all, the ally must believe in your child, and in you. Autism is not a disaster, even though we may initially feel that it is. There is great depth and meaning and beauty to be found here, if we have the eyes to see.
About Kelly Marcena ~
I understand the experience of autism as both a parent and a former clinical counselor. I have two sons on the autism spectrum who are now in their early twenties, in college and doing well. When they were first diagnosed, and in the few years that followed, I had to navigate changes in perspective that were very difficult. I learned that I was going to have to personally grow and change in order to effectively parent my children.
As a clinical counselor, I spent several years working with adults, children and families helping build effective internal and external relationships. And I continue to teach developmental psychology at the college level, remaining well-versed in the most recent research in psychological development. My courses focus on helping parents and caregivers accept themselves in their own development and build connections with others.
I also have a captain’s license, conduct sailing charters, and get out on the water as often as possible.
Descriptions of what I offer are found under What We Do. I am happy to travel to your home, or have a phone call or a video conference to share more about how I might most help you, or you can reach out here. The video library is small but growing and can be found here.
Be well, be at peace and know you are the best parent in the world for your child.
